Why Hong Kong is Perfect for Solo Travellers

Solo travel is like the new cool badge of life that you have to collect so that you can convince your children and grandchildren that you were one of the cool people in your time. No matter how, why, and when you’re traveling solo, and no matter whether you’re a seasoned or novice solo traveler, you’ll find something that floats your boat in Hong Kong. Need some convincing? Here you go.

1. Hong Kong is very safe

Some people love the attention they get as a foreigner, while some people want to crawl into a ditch to avoid stares.  If you’re the latter, you’ll like Hong Kong.  Thanks to the diversity of its population and openness to foreigners working and studying in Hong Kong, your presence in a local dim sum restaurant would probably not raise an eyebrow. In fact, Hong Kong is one of those places that feel nearly like London or New York, and anyone can be just as likely to be a tourist or a local.

2. You won’t stick out too much as a foreigner

3. It’s great for the social solo traveller

Hong Kong is party central. and both locals and foreigners flock to its many clubs, bars, and pubs for some good socializing.  Some say that it’s because Hong Kong’s homes are so tiny, it’s better to be out. Whatever it is, if you love meeting people over a pint or a glass of whiskey, Hong Kong has it all for you. If drinking is not your thing, sign up for events at Meetup Hong Kong, where you can find anything from meditation to hiking to connecting with coders.

4. It also offers a lot of alone time in nature

How can such a densely populated city offer so much alone time? Well, the beauty of Hong Kong is that it’s surrounded by accessible nature.  Lantau Island, Lamma, Sai Kung and Cheng Chau are popular getaway destinations when the concrete jungle gets a bit too much.  Hiking the Dragon’s Back trail in Hong Kong will give you the most amazing and open views of the sea.  If you’re into strange and rare rocks, there’s the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark where you can spend an entire day discovering a side of Hong Kong you never knew existed.

5. Public Transport is Excellent

Getting around on your own can be daunting, especially if it’s your first time and you’re more used to driving. You can park all your worries aside because Hong Kong has one of the best public transportation systems. You get an idea of how easy it is to get around the city from the time you step out of the airport and get on board the Airport Express. The MTR (Mass Transit Railway) is quick, inexpensive, and it's 11 lines literally get you anywhere.

6.  English is widely spoken

Thanks for British colonialism, English is widely spoken in Hong Kong. Many signs are written in English, and many Hong Kongers, especially the younger generation, can speak English. If you ever feel a little lost, especially in a restaurant, simply ask the table next to you for a little help, and you’re most likely to receive it.

7. Indulge unapologetically

Hong Kong is a city of excess. Indulge in excessive shopping, excessive eating, and an excessive number of massage sessions. If you’ve always wanted to shop and get carried away by the range of curios, interesting antiques, or edgy fashion, then your solo trip to Hong Kong will let you do just that. Spend as much time as you want wandering around the shops, or go for two massages a day. With no one else to accommodate, Hong Kong offers you the chance to fully indulge in your whims and fancies.
