History of Jin Dynasty-Jinshangjing Museum

Jinshangjing Historical Museum is located in Acheng district, Harbin city of Heilongjiang province, covering an area of 50 thousand square meters. Acheng city was the first capital city of Jin dynasty, where Jurchen culture, Qidan culture and Yellow river culture converge. It is the only historical museum that is featured with the culture and customs of Jin dynasty in China.



Jin,also known as the Jurchen dynasty, was founded by the Wanyan clan of the Jurchens, the ancestors of the Manchus who established the Qing dynasty some 500 years later. It was among a few dynasty that’s being founded by ethnic minorities in Chinese history. The museum perfectly display the history of Jin dynasty from the very beginning till the end, as well as the development of economy, culture and transportation.



Before coming in the museum, you have to walk through a corridor with shape of knife crossed above. The knives stand for the character of Jurchen people. As an aggressive minority, the state of Jurchen was obtained by tons of fight and battles. Passing the corridor, there is a 18 meters high Military Camp, which is the center of the museum buildings. The design is a combination of warrior helmet and camp, meaning Jurchen people is making a living with fishing and live within camps.



There are 9 exhibition halls inside the museum, 5 halls on the ground, the rest 4 halls are under the ground, each one is featured with different themes and tells the story of Jin dynasty with pictures, written words and historical artifacts . The 5 halls are prologue hall, development course and Jinshangjing hall, economic and cultural hall, original Jin cultural hall and bronze mirror themed of Jin dynasty.



In the front of prologue hall, there are four stone busts of 4 emperors of Jin dynasty, with 16 sun and moon flags on both sides. In prominent position there displays the territory of Jin and several jurisdictions of Jinshangjing area. It is amazing to see vast area in the heyday of Jin , north to Lake Baikal and Lesser Mountains. Now it’s all gone with the history, on the bright side, it did set up the territory base for Qing dynasty.

There are over 500 mirrors In the bronze mirror hall, mainly are Jin bronze mirrors and dragon pattern mirrors from different dynasties, from Warring States Period in 227 B.C to Ming and Qing dynasty. . The staff classify those mirror into into 10 different units for display. As the tools and handcrafts for ancient Chinese, bronze mirrors has a history of more than four thousand years in China.

The different shapes and patterns vividly depict social life in various periods, such as fish patterns, dragon pattern and others. It is interesting to see history on such delicate mirror. There is a beautiful yet rare mirror called Double-carp Mirror, weighted as 12.4kg and with 43 centimeters. It is also the largest round bronze mirror that’s found in China.
