Feng Shui for your home

Ever entered a building or a home and had feelings of harmony or uneasiness, but can’t really pinpoint anything particularly different about the interior design? If you’ve always felt that angles and the placement of objects in the home have more than just an aesthetic meaning, then you may be interested in the ancient practice of Feng Shui.

What is Feng Shui anyway?

Well, just what is Feng Shui? Developed over 3,000 years ago in China, it is practiced as both as a science and an art of promoting harmonious energy in a space for the optimum health and happiness of people who live and work in that environment. Many homes in Hong Kong and even landmarks such as the HSBC main building have been built after consultation with Feng Shui masters.

Another prime example of how beliefs that have a basis in Feng Shui have shaped architecture is The Repulse Bay. As the presence of both mountains and water bodes well in Feng Shui philosophy, Hong Kong is naturally blessed with good Feng Shui. There is also the belief that dragons, which symbolize strength and good fortune, create positive energy when they travel to and from the mountains and the water. Hence, The Repulse Bay was supposedly designed to have openings in the middle of the buildings, known as “dragon gates,” so as to allow the dragons to pass through and to promote the continuous flow of good luck.

Intrigued by the ancient philosophy?  Here’s what you need to know to make your own home Feng Shui-approved.

Feng Shui for Wellbeing

Your home is a place where you recharge and rejuvenate, and so you’d want to give it a balance of calming and energizing qualities.

Keeping Light

Natural light is a great mood-booster, and if you’ve ever had the winter blues, you’d know how important natural light is when it comes to lifting your spirits.  On the other hand, too much sunlight may cause feelings of restlessness. Choose day and night curtains that are versatile and let you control the amount of light you let in.  Day curtains let in natural light while reducing its intensity, and night curtains are useful to keep external lights out for a good night’s rest.

De-clutter your space

Also, make sure that you home is regularly de-cluttered. Clutter in the home may block the flow of energy and cause stagnation, as well as scatter your mind. Keeping your mess literally in your closet doesn’t count as de-cluttering. Also, if your bed has always doubled as a storage space underneath, you may want to keep that space free so that you sleep with circulating energy.

Feng Shui for Wealth

Water is Wealth

You may have heard that the Chinese associate the water element with wealth, and you’re probably familiar with the saying that health is wealth. Having a water feature, such a fountain is one of the most common Feng Shui principles that can be adopted since water is thought to attract wealth and health.

You don’t need to live in a large space to have a water fountain as you can easily find miniature water fountains in many Feng Shui shops or online. If you want to keep the passion up in your bedroom, avoid placing your water feature there or keep it moderate as it is thought to dampen the fire and reduce your libido.

Feng Shui for Love and Romance

Want to invite love into your life and keep the romance? Regardless of your relationship status, adding some Feng Shui elements into your home could turn your Tinder dinner date into something a lot more substantial.

Space for Two

If you want to make space for a relationship in your life, then ensure that your home says that as well. Nothing says “I’m not ready” more than a photo of your ex, or a home that’s still very much cluttered with gifts from a previous relationship.
And, if you’re in a relationship, be mindful that your home is an equal representation of both of you. For example, ask yourself if the bedroom is overwhelming ‘you’ or your partner. Keep it as fair as possible. Ideally, the design and décor of the bedroom speak of the taste of two people, and the belongings of one person shouldn’t be taking over nearly the entire space of the room.
Also, there are also symbols and images that you can add to your home. For example, a pair of Mandarin Ducks is known to be a symbol of long-lasting and faithful love. You don’t necessarily need to go with the Mandarin Ducks, but you can choose an animal or symbol that connects with you, and that comes in a pair.
